Calculate Loan Payment →Add tax to a price or pull it out of a tax-inclusive total, at any rate or with Canadian GST, HST, PST, RST and QST by province.
A one-page checklist of the numbers every small business should know: margins, break-even, true employee cost and more.
Canadian taxes are charged on the amount before tax. In extract mode the calculator works backwards from the combined rate to find the pre-tax amount inside a total.
Amount: $100, Saskatchewan, add tax.
GST = $100 x 5% = $5.00. PST = $100 x 6% = $6.00. Total = $100 + $5 + $6 = $111.00.
Run it in extract mode on $111 and you get the $100 back: the tax inside a Saskatchewan total is 11/111 of the amount paid.
To add tax, multiply the pre-tax amount by each rate that applies and add the results. In most provinces the federal and provincial taxes both apply to the same pre-tax amount, so you can also add the rates together first. In HST provinces there is a single combined rate instead of separate GST and PST lines.
To extract tax from a total that already includes it, divide the total by one plus the combined rate. On a $111 Saskatchewan receipt, $111 / 1.11 = $100 before tax. This matters for bookkeeping, because the tax portion of your sales is never your revenue.
Charging the wrong tax, or recording tax-inclusive sales as revenue, are two of the most common and most expensive small business bookkeeping errors. Getting the split right on every invoice keeps your GST/HST returns simple and your revenue numbers honest.
Canadian rules also depend on where your customer is, not just where you are: the place of supply generally decides which province's rates apply to a sale. When in doubt, check the current rules with the Canada Revenue Agency or your accountant.
Build tax into your process rather than your memory: set the correct rates in your invoicing or store settings per province, review them when governments announce changes, and reconcile what you collected against what you remitted every filing period. If you price for consumers, decide deliberately whether your shelf prices include tax, and use extract mode here to see the revenue inside them.
Saskatchewan charges 5 percent GST plus 6 percent PST, a combined 11 percent on most goods and services. This calculator's Canadian mode uses the verified 2026 rates for every province and territory.
Divide the total by one plus the combined rate expressed as a decimal. For an 11 percent combined rate, divide by 1.11. Switch this calculator to extract mode and it does it for you, line by line.
Generally the tax of the province where the goods are delivered or the service is received, called the place of supply. The rules have exceptions, so confirm your situation with the CRA guidance or an accountant.
No. Since 2013, Quebec's QST is calculated on the price before GST, the same base as the GST itself, so the two simply add: 5 percent plus 9.975 percent for a combined 14.975 percent.
Most businesses must register for GST/HST once taxable sales pass the small supplier threshold, and provincial rules differ. This calculator does the arithmetic; whether you must charge is a registration question for the CRA and your province.
